The rate of infertility in Canada has doubled over the last 20 years according to a Stats Canada report, in part because more women are delaying pregnancy until they are in their 30’s and even 40’s. “Frequently women don’t know that fertility declines more quickly after 35 and that a woman over 35 and her partner should have a full fertility workup if they haven’t conceived after six months of unprotected intercourse,” says Dr Taylor. “The biological clock starts ticking much more quickly at this age. So, the sooner a problem is diagnosed, the more quickly the treatment can start.”
Recent advances in fertility treatment and preimplantation genetic testing have improved the chances of achieving a pregnancy and having a healthy baby even for women over the age of 38.
